Understanding EU Ecodesign Commission Regulation EU 2019/1781
Starting on July 1st, 2021, the new Commission Regulation EU 2019/1781 on electric motors and variable speed drives will go into effect and replace the existing regulations.
Under these new rules, several induction motors that were previously not covered will now be regulated. The following efficiency levels will be compulsory for ATEX three-phase motors installed in Europe:
IE2 on motors 0.12 … < 0.75 kW
IE3 on motors 0.75 … 1000 kW
This applies to 3-phase single speed motors (50 Hz, 60 Hz, 50/60 Hz), ATEX motors for Group II explosive atmospheres (Ex ec, Ex tb, Ex tc, Ex db and Ex dc), brake motors, rated duty class motors (S1, S3 > 80%, S6 > 80%) and Totally Enclosed Air Over (TEAO) motors. With the new regulation, it is important to note that the option of IE2 and VSD is no longer applicable.
Commission Regulation EU 2019/1781 will also regulate the efficiency of variable speed drives. Information requirements like speed and torque efficiency at different load points will increase the efficiency of the complete system.
As in the previous regulation, some motors designed for specific conditions are excluded or benefit from more favorable conditions. These major exemptions include high-voltage motors, ATEX mining motors, and Totally Enclosed Non-Ventilated (TENV) motors.
