Marathon® Motors has a 100-plus year history of making “Motors to get the job done”™. The Marathon brand encompasses thousands of products and solutions found in some of the most demanding commercial and industrial applications around the world.
A History of Industry Leadership
Marathon Motors started in 1913 as Marathon Electric in Wausau, Wisconsin, USA. In a converted logging mill on Plumer's Island, the young company made its first product, a single phase 115VAC, 1/4 horsepower washing machine motor.
After a few years as a fledgling motor manufacturer, inventor Austin Kimble took over as general manager. Kimble introduced new production methods and products based on his patents. With mixed results, Marathon's portfolio expanded into fans, talking movies and metered washing machines. During the 1930s, the company reorganized as Marathon Electric Manufacturing Corporation and turned profits during the Great Depression.
Marathon expanded in the following decades. New production plants opened and Marathon purchased Pennsylvania-based Burke Electronics in 1949. This purchase allowed Marathon to enter into the generators, fuse, and terminal blocks fields.
In 1997, Regal Rexnord (then Regal Beloit), also based in Wisconsin, bought Marathon.
Part of the Regal Brand Family
Marathon Motors was an ideal acquisition for Regal. Today, Marathon designs, engineers, and builds motors from 1/4 to over 7,500 horsepower with voltages from 120VAC to 13.2kV.
As part of Regal Rexnord, Marathon's footprint and product offerings have grown. Marathon introduced the Globetrotter®, the first true world-class motor in 2002. Other new motor lines launched since becoming a Regal brand include:
- The BlueMax ® Severe Duty Motor (2000);
- The SyMAX® Permanent Magnet AC Motor (2010);
- The Medium Voltage and ANEMA Endurance Series Motors (2020); and
- The Flex-In-1™ line of General Purpose Motors (2022).
Marathon electric motors are also making technological innovations. The SyMAX® family line are hyper-efficient alternatives to conventional motor drive combinations. SyMAX motors are designed to reduce energy consumption by 25 percent by permanent magnet technology. Designed with pre-existing magnetic fields, SyMAX are inherently more efficient than NEMA premium induction motors. Thanks to permanent magnet technology and intelligent features, SyMAX motors conserve energy wherever a standard induction motor would waste it.
Other Marathon innovations give customers more options with their electric motors. The Flex-in-1™ line of general purpose motors offers a configurable design to make it simple to modify a motor to fit an application. With the Flex-in-1, users can stock one motor for multiple application needs.
Marathon is one of the large electric motor manufacturers that is still an American owned company. Thanks to its innovative portfolio, Marathon has a global reach. Marathon facilities can be found in the United States, Mexico, China, India and Brazil. Commercial and industrial applications around the world depend on Marathon's NEMA® and IEC® motors.
As a global brand that's part of the Regal Rexnord family, Marathon provides other benefits to customers. Combined with Regal Rexnord 's Motion Control Systems products, it allows customers to source their entire powertrain from one company, as opposed to sourcing the components separately.
Marathon motors power millions of applications that efficiently convert power into motion to keep the world moving.
