How to Identify the Age of a Marathon Motor

Understanding Date Codes

In order to determine the warranty status of Marathon motors , we have prefixed letters or a combination of a number and a letter as a date code to the model or serial number on each motor nameplate.

The key to this code is the Date Code Chart, pictured above and explained in detail below.

Date coding with one number and one letter will cover motors from 1963 through 1971 and 1994 through 2002. Date coding with two letters covers motors from 1972 through 1993 and 2003 through 2024. Motors and generators 364 frame and larger sizes will have date code preceding serial number and smaller frame sizes, date code will precede model number.

The first letter or number of the prefix indicates the year, and last letter of the prefix indicates the month of manufacture.

When the prefix consists of only two letters or one number and one letter, no inherent overheating protection is incorporated in the motor. When inherent overheating protection is provided in the motor, an additional letter is inserted between the two date indicating letters or number and letter. This middle letter indicates the type of protector provided as listed below:

* Motor recognition covers 48, 56. 143T, 145T, 180T, and 210T frame motors only.

Motor without inherent overheating protection:

• January, 1963 or 1994 Date Code - 1A (model number)
• January, 1972 or 2003 Date Code - AA (model number)

Motor with Standard UL listed protection. manual reset:

• January, 1963 or 1994 Date Code - 1PA (model number)
• January, 1972 or 2003 Date Code - APA (model number)

Motor with Standard UL listed protection, automatic reset:

• January, 1963 or 1994 Date Code - 1QA (model number)
• January, 1972 or 2003 Date Code - AQA(model number)

On all models without overload protectors there will be a numeral and a letter prefixed to the model or serial number. The numeral and the letter will designate the year and month in which the motors were built in accordance with the following table:
