The traditional paper machine drive train for fixed rolls consists of a motor connected to a reducer with a close coupled gear type coupling. The reducer is then connected to the paper machine roll with a floating shaft gear coupling. These couplings transmit motor torque and accommodate shaft misalignment, but they are a maintenance nightmare and very inefficient.

United States Industry Overview
Demand for paper is forecast to decline as offices and consumers move toward cloud computing and other electronic and internet-based information sources. For example, many companies are phasing out paper invoices in favor of online invoices. This will negatively affect the paper industry machinery segment over the coming five years.
Pulp, Paper & Forestry Industry Machinery
Machinery for the paper and paperboard industries includes raw wood processors (e.g. stationary chippers, log debarkers and splitters), pulp makers and molders, papermaking machines (e.g. coaters, finishers, corrugators, cutters and folders), and sandpaper machinery. As with the printing industries, the use of electronic media via the internet and mobile devices has reduced overall demand for paper-based media.
Industrial Production Index
The industrial production index serves as a macro-level indicator of manufacturing in the United States. As the volume of industrial production contracts, demand for manufacturing products does as well. Likewise, as the volume of industrial production rises, so does demand for industrial machinery. Within this environment, pulp, paper and forestry products will decline through 2021.
