What Makes Crane Motors Different?
A crane needs a motor with a high starting torque. Crane motors also need to handle repeated stops and starts without overheating. With all the lifting a crane performs, crane motors have to be able to bear anything from an empty hook to a full load. And crane motors need to be able to rotate clockwise and counterclockwise.
Most motors are squirrel cage motors. But squirrel cage motors cannot generate the necessary high starting torque with a low starting current. Slip ring motors (also called a collector ring, electric swivel or rotary electrical joint) excel for crane operations.
Slip Rings Solve The Lift Problem
The optimal motors for use in crane applications are slip ring motors. Inside a slip ring motor, you'll find a ring that rotates around the rotor and stationary brushes. The slip ring adds external resistance to the rotor circuit. In turn, this generates more starting torque.
Slip rings help transmit power from a motionless structure to one that is rotating. To get moving, slip ring motors need much less starting current than a squirrel cage motor. Slip ring motors also power compressors, automated welders and even amusement park rides.

Slip ring motors are preferable for crane duty. Slip ring motors are suitable for jobs requiring frequent starts, stops, and reversals. Another benefit of slip rings is that they are reliable. These motors play a key role in providing smooth and efficient performance. Not to mention jobs that involve heavy loads.
One way slip ring motors are different from squirrel cage motors is upkeep. The moving ring will come into contact with the stationary brushes. Because of this, the brushes are likely to get worn down in the long run and will need maintenance.
