The marine industry needs an inboard or submersible, high performance variable or fixed speed Dredge Pump motor, operating on the seabed to pump silt, sand and aggregate the size of a baseball. The in-board Dredge Pumps are the primary source for transporting mixture to the hopper or discharge location; and are also essential for mixture transport in stationary dredgers and at pipeline booster stations. Submerged dredge pumps are in the suction pipe and help to transport the mixture cost effectively from a greater depth. The combination of extreme temperatures, pressures, corrosion, large external forces and extended maintenance requires an innovative approach in reducing downtime and operating costs. Mechanically these motors require accuracy and precision due to specialty in mounting arrangement. Motors for Hopper Dredgers need to operate up to depth of 30m under water, at an inclination and withstanding axial and radial forces. The pump impellers could be directly mounted on the motor shaft. The electrical power could be a generating set or a Variable Frequency Drive.
Solution
A high-performance, reliable and cost-effective solution was engineered and custom built to achieve the twin goals of high reliability and reduced operating cost. A high-efficiency variable speed or fixed speed motor is customized with special proprietary marine epoxy coatings, VPI treated winding, oil filled, with adequate sealing arrangement, special terminal box and a special bearing arrangement is added to deliver high torques to meet the need for IP68 enclosure. The compact footprint reduces size and weight, to reduce the size of the hydraulic dredge, saving money and installation cost. The motors from Regal meet all the challenges with highly optimized performance.
