Segment Analysis
United States Industry Overview
The compressor manufacturing industry produces both industrial and domestic goods. The majority of the industry’s products, however, are used in either manufacturing, mining and resource extraction operations, or infrastructure and utilities construction projects. Industry operators also rely extensively on demand from industrial markets abroad, particularly Canada, Mexico and China.

Compressors are used in a variety of sectors, including mining and manufacturing; the industrial production index (IPI) measures the output of these sectors.
Air and Gas Compressors
Air and gas compressors, including centrifugal, reciprocating and nonagricultural spraying and dusting compressors, account for 38.5% of the industry’s total revenue. Compressors are used extensively in the high-value natural gas segment, where they are used to compress natural gas during extraction and transport. This segment also produces vacuum pumps, which are used in the manufacturing of electric lamps, motor vehicle engines, and aircraft. Following the rest of the industry, this product line has been diminished by oil price declines. For example, sprayer devices that use compressors are largely purchased at the industrial scale for cleaning oil rigs.
