5 Tips for Gearmotor Installation and Application
Despite this, some applications still subject these geared motors to periodic overloads that threaten the motor’s life expectancy. With these electric motors serving a variety of applications, it’s not always easy to identify your application needs.
We’ve compiled a list of five tips to help you during the installation of your AC gearmotors or DC gearmotors:
1: Decide on Power Source
The first and most important step in selecting a motor is choosing the type of current it will run on. As we mentioned, gearmotors are available in alternating current and direct current designs. Choosing between the two will be dependent on the variable speed needs of the gearmotor.
2: Review Size and Mounting Requirements
Some applications have major restrictions when it comes to the size or mount of the gear motor. Right angle or parallel shaft motors are available for your mounting needs. We encourage you to browse our listing of LEESON gearmotors to find one that meets your needs.
3: Keep the Motor Above the Gearbox
We understand there are limitations to space and mounting, but you should avoid placing the gearmotor below the gearbox at all costs. This will help ensure no lubricant leaks into the motor in the event the shaft seal fails.
4: Note the Torque
Always follow the full load torque values listed on the motor’s nameplate for any application. The gearmotor’s stall torque has the potential to exceed recommended full load torques and this causes damage to the motor and gear unit, especially in ratios of 60:1 and higher. If the motor is not properly protected by fusing, peak torques may be high enough to damage the motor.
5: Respect the Motor Application Environment
Different applications call for different degrees of ingress protection (IP) and ambient temperature ratings. Disregarding the gearmotor’s environment leaves the motor at serious risk of failure.
