Challenge

The helicopter gearbox called for a spherical roller bearing with reduced weight without increasing the envelope of the application and no decrease in performance while reducing cost. They turned to Regal Rexnord in that they have over 60 years of experience processing aerospace materials for McGill^® custom bearing applications. As important as weight was in the application, long life and reliable performance were just as critical.

Solution

McGill^® engineers worked collaboratively with the customer to integrate a gear into the outer ring of the bearing. McGill^® engineers were able to analyze the bearing and develop production techniques combine the outer ring of the bearing with the gear, thus reducing components and weight. The end result was a new robust bearing design that met the customer goals.
