There is a Pool Pump Regulation, NOT a Motor Regulation
There is a Pool Pump Regulation, NOT a Motor Regulation
By now you have probably heard that the Department of Energy (DOE) issued the Dedicated Purpose Pool Pump regulation (DPPP), effective July 19, 2021, requiring compliance with new energy efficiency standards for pool pumps. Pool pumps manufactured on or after July 19, 2021 must comply with the new energy efficiency standards. The DPPP does not cover the subject of replacement motors. While the DOE has proposed a replacement motor regulation, it has not been approved. In short, there is no federal DOE replacement motor regulation at this time.
So, what does all of this mean for replacement motors?
Currently the DPPP regulations do not cover the subject of replacement pool pump motors. Manufacturers may still produce, and offer for sale, replacement single-speed, two-speed and variable speed replacement pool pump motors. This means that except in California, all of the pool pump motors you are familiar with are still available and compliant for service repair and replacement purposes.
Even in the absence of a replacement pool pump motor regulation, variable speed replacement motors are a good option when repairing existing pool pumps in the field. In addition, there are many retrofit replacement motor options available that provide the same benefits as installing a new variable speed pool pump motor at a fraction of the cost and save you time on the job.
The new Century® VGreen EVO™ variable speed retrofit replacement motors are a universal solution for pool service professionals. The VGreen EVO motors are available in multiple horsepower and flange configurations, allowing you to stock your truck with the right option for your customers so you always have a replacement motor on hand when you need it. Let’s say you operate a pool service company in a market that is primarily 1.5hp and square flange. Simply keep one variable speed retrofit replacement motor, EVQ165, and a few shaft seals and now you have a motor for most customers on your route. Now, when you diagnose a failed pool pump motor, you can offer a replacement on site rather than return at a later date with parts to do the job, saving you time, increasing your profitability and providing your customer with monthly savings in energy costs!
California Replacement Motors and CEC Title 20 Regulations
CEC Title 20 Section 1605.3(g)(5) and Section 1605.3(g)(6) are effective and do regulate replacement motors in the state of California. CEC Title 20 Section 1605.3(g)(5) requires any motor used for residential filter pump applications and manufactured before July 19, 2021 that is greater than or equal to 1.0 Total Horse Power (THP) be replaced with a two-speed or variable speed motor. Effective July 10, 2021, CEC Title 20 Section 1605.3(g)(6) requires any motor used for replacement of a dedicated-purpose pool pump motor on all residential and commercial applications and manufactured on or after July 19, 2021 that is greater than or equal to 0.5 THP be replaced with a variable speed motor. The new VGreen EVO retrofit variable speed motors are compliant with both Title 20 Sections 1605.3(g)(5) and 1605.3(g)(6), providing a simple solution for your business to remain compliant, save time, increase profitability and provide your customer with monthly savings in energy costs!
