Top Uses for Electronically Commutated Motors
Electronically commutated motors (ECMs) are innovative, reliable, and, most importantly, versatile. What are the top HVAC uses for ECMs? Find out where these powerhouse motors can help your clients the most.
Electronically Commutated Motors in the Field
Electronically commutated motors run off direct current (DC) flow in motor windings to create variable speed. The current powers a microprocessor within the motor. The microprocessor talks with the air handler, furnace, or package system. Together, the two determine the output speed of the electric motor.
The speed will then vary with the greater systems requirements. Since the motor is programmable, it can achieve any combination of constant speed, torque, or airflow. The rotor of an ECM motor is permanently magnetized. This increases the electrical efficiency of the unit. Induction motors need a constant draw of power to keep the rotor magnetized. This makes the ECM system a more efficient choice than standard induction motors. ECMs are optimal performers in the commercial HVAC space.
The Importance of Keeping Commercial HVAC Systems Running Smoothly
Air Handling and Condensing Units
Neglected maintenance to a client-side air handling and condensing unit can be detrimental. The buildup of particulates and debris within the air handling and condensing units can lead to overheating or motor failure. If motor failure happens, you need a versatile backup. To minimize system downtime, you need quick access to a motor with a wide range of horsepower options to fit the numerous systems on the market.
Refrigeration Systems
Refrigeration motors keep our food and medicines safe. Regular part inspections are key to keeping a high-performance refrigeration system running reliably. Overlooked wear and tear on parts and lubrication levels can lead to costly and motor breakdowns. Dirt and debris buildup on filters and components is one of the largest contributors to part failure. Encourage your clients to maintain regular system inspections and cleanings. This can go a long way in keeping systems running at peak performance.
