This month’s Motor Minute™ topic is user interface vs. 16-4pin adapter.

A common tech support question I get is, “When replacing 16-pin variable speed motors with the Genteq^® Evergreen^® VS universal replacement motor, why do some motors require the user interface and others only need the 16-4 pin adapter?”

The simple answer is, “Even though these motors all have the same plugs, all 16-pin motors are not created equally.” Over the 30+ year evolution of 16-pin communicated variable speed ECM motors, multiple communication types have been used. For this reason, they cannot all be replaced with the same device.

The largest volume by far, of 16-pin variable speed motors, include Genteq^® models 2.0, 2.3 and Eon^® motors. All of these motors require the Evergreen^® VS user interface and motor for proper replacement.

The smallest volume by far, of 16-pin variable speed motors, is the Genteq® model 2.5 motor. This motor requires the Genteq 16-4 pin adapter and Evergreen^® VS motor for proper replacement.

Since it is far more likely you will need the user interface for replacing the vast majority of 16-pin variable speed motors, we recently added the user interface to the box with the motor.

The easiest and most accurate method to get the correct Evergreen^® VS replacement motor and accessory is to use our online cross reference tool.

• On your computer go to www.thedealertoolbox.com
• On your smart phone download the free “Dealer Toolbelt” app and select the “Resource Center”
• Then select “Genteq^® ECM Motor Cross Reference Tool”

On the “Product Cross Reference” page, enter the model number from the Genteq^® or formerly branded GE^®* motor to be replaced and click search.

The result of your search is the exact model Evergreen^® VS motor and accessory needed to replace that motor. In this example, the first option is the motor with the user interface (UI) in the box

• Catalog # 6505VUI

If you move the slide bar to the right, your second option is the correct motor and user interface which are still sold individually.

• Catalog # 6505V (Evergreen^® VS Motor)
• Catalog # 5K010V (Evergreen^® VS User Interface)
