A2L Solutions
“A2L” isn’t a single material — it’s a class of refrigerants composed of hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), with lower toxicity than other classifications of refrigerants.
Starting January 1, 2025, the use of high global warming potential (GWP) refrigerants is restricted under a U.S. EPA final rule published in October 2023. This regulation prohibits the manufacture and import of HVAC products with GWPs > 700.
The United States Environmental Protection Agency defines GWP as a measure of how much energy the emission of 1 ton of a gas will absorb over a given period of time, relative to the emission of 1 ton of carbon dioxide (CO2).
A2L refrigerants offer up to a 99% reduction in GWP from HFC-based refrigerants, making them the best option for HVAC applications.
To accommodate A2L refrigerants and comply with the new EPA regulations, chiller manufacturers must ensure their units are designed to mitigate these risks.
A2L Solutions from Regal Rexnord
A2L Certified
A2L CertifiedAn A2L Certified product has been tested by a third‑party (Underwriters Laboratories) and is certified as a recognized component (LZGH2). This recognition confirms the product meets all required safety, construction, and performance standards for operation with A2L refrigerants.
A2L Compliant
A2L CompliantAn A2L Compliant product is manufacturer-reviewed to operate within systems containing A2L refrigerants. This denotes similarities in the product's family and construction to those of A2L Certified products, but have not been evaluated* by a third party.
*Upon request, Regal Rexnord will evaluate pursuing formal third-party certification of products.
