"EC Indoor Blower Motors, Resistance is Futile", by Christopher Mohalley. June 2020 feature reposted with permission from RSES Journal.
Thirty-two years after ECM (electronically commutated motor) technology was introduced to the residential and light commercial HVAC industry, the indoor blower motor segment of this industry is now almost completely converted from PSC to ECM. Interestingly enough, the first application for ECM in the HVAC industry was also the indoor blower motor. The constant air-flow “variable speed” indoor blower motor was introduced by GE* in 1987.

"Part 2: EC Indoor Blower Motors, Resistance is Futile"by Christopher Mohalley. August 2020 feature reposted with permission from RSES Journal.
A common misconception about EC indoor blower motors is that they all maintain airflow and solve airflow issues such as undersized ductwork and/or dirt load on the air side components. In part one of this article (see June 2020 issue of RSES Journal), I explained that there are actually two different types of EC indoor blower motors, constant airflow and constant torque.

"Part 3: EC Indoor Blower Motors, Resistance Is Futile", by Christopher Mohalley. October 2020 feature reposted with permission from RSES Journal.
In Parts 1 and 2 of this series (published in the June and August 2020 issues, respectively, of RSES Journal), I discussed how to adjust airflow and the airflow performance characteristics of EC indoor blower motors. The information in those articles can also be used for diagnosing operating ECMs that exhibit airflow related issues.

"Draft Inducers Are All the Same, Right?" by Bill Spohn, as seen on HVAC & Refrigeration Insider Online.
Your goal in “repair mode” is to restore the equipment to full and safe operating conditions. What harm could there be in using any “equivalent” induced draft blower?

The History of Efficiency Standards for Draft Inducer Blowers
A few decades ago, residential furnaces were simple but inefficient. Now, they're more complex, thanks to components like the draft inducer blower. Find out how higher efficiency standards made this piece of equipment a vital part of modern home HVAC systems.
How to Find the Correct Draft Inducer Blower
Draft inducer blowers are original equipment manufacturer (OEM) replacements in furnaces and water heaters. Because draft inducer blowers are considered critical components, they should never be a randomly selected replacement part. Find the correct HVAC replacement part with our Draft Inducer Blower Cross Reference Guide.
PSC Motors vs Electronically Commutated Motors (ECM)
This guide will help technicians in residential and commercial HVAC understand basics of both Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) Motors and Electronically Commutated Motors (ECM).
Electric Motor Terminology and Characteristics
This guide to HVAC electric motors reviews the three critical elements – application, characteristics, and types, which are vital to selecting a correct replacement motor.
Identifying PSC Replacement Motors
Review how to use a PSC motor nameplate, measurements of the motor’s dimensions and questions about application usage to find the correct PSC replacement motor.
How Reducing HVAC Motor Inventory on Your Truck Can Improve Your Bottom Line
For HVAC companies, your trucks are basically your storefronts and represent your brand. Having all the necessary tools and resources available from your trucks will not only make the job easier for your service technicians but also increase your bottom line. One of the best ways to optimize your trucks is to reduce the HVAC inventory that they carry day to day.
Replacing Most Commonly Failed HVAC Motors
Knowing your options when it comes to replacing HVAC motors and induced draft blowers can lead to easier installation and more satisfied customers.
